Kyonan

Kyonan Town, Chiba Prefecture

I chose Kyonan Town, Chiba Prefecture, as another base.

Located in the south of the Boso Peninsula, it is a very comfortable town where you can feel the maritime climate, which is cooler in summer and warmer in winter than Tokyo. It seems that it came to be called Kyonan because it is located south of Mt. Nokogiri. “Kyo” of Kyonan means Nokogiri, and “nan” means the south.

Surrounded by Tokyo Bay and the Boso Hills, boasts an abundance of natural beauty. The sea around here is called Uraga Channel, and the water is so clear that you wouldn’t think it’s Tokyo Bay, and I have enjoyed fishing and canoeing.

Typhoon damage

In 2019, Kyonan Town was severely damaged by Typhoon No. 15. Even after three years, the scars of the tragedy at that time still remain here and there, such as the blue sheets that cover the roof and fallen trees.

The creek that I used to visit every year

Surrounded by tall trees, it’s a pleasant place to cool even in the middle of summer. I will never forget the shock I felt when I saw the tragic sight of huge trees being knocked down by a typhoon and blocking rivers. It was an experience of sadness and, at the same time, witnessing the helplessness of human beings.

In addition to the enormous damage, due to various social issues such as the aging population, and unfortunately many people seemed to have left the area after the typhoon.

Local contribution

Until now, I used to visit many times just for fun. However, as I grew older, I became more interested in social issues, and especially when I started to face the current situation and the future seriously while raising children. I began to feel somewhat unnatural and unsatisfactory in the way of thinking, and even in the life that lives only in it.

That’s why I finally decided to live in Kyonan.

Believing that a deeper understanding of Japan’s attractions will lead to a better future. And I would be even more happy if I could contribute to regional revitalization in a natural way.

While continuing to live in the city as before, I started to live in the countryside in Kyonan Town from now. I’m so excited to see what will be born by balancing these two life styles, which can be said to be polar opposites, and what kind of future awaits.

鋸南町

私がもう一つの拠点として選んだのは、千葉県鋸南町。

房総半島の南に位置し、東京に比べて夏涼しく冬は暖かい海洋性気候を感じることができる大変居心地の良い町だ。鋸山の南にあるので鋸南町と呼ばれるようになったらしい。都内から車で1時間ちょっとでアクセスできる場所でありながら、東京湾、房総丘陵に囲まれたこの地は、豊かな自然が残され、長年のお気に入りで何度も遊びにくるほど理想の地域だった。この辺りの海は浦賀水道と呼ばれ、東京湾とは思えないほど水は透明で、私も釣りやカヌーなどを楽しんできた。

台風被害

2019年に鋸南町は台風15号により甚大な被害を被った。3年経った今でも屋根を覆うブルーシートや倒木など、当時の惨劇の爪痕がところどころ残っている。

毎年のように遊びに行っていた小川

高い木々に囲まれて真夏でも涼しい気持ちの良い場所で、ヨシノボリやモクズガニも採れる恰好の遊び場。台風で巨木が薙ぎ倒されて川を堰き止めている無惨な光景をみた時のショックは忘れられない。悲しみと同時に人間の無力さを目の当たりにした経験だった。

甚大な被害に加えて、例に漏れず高齢化や様々な社会課題が重なり、残念なことに台風の後に地域を離れた人達も多かったようだ。

地域貢献

若いころはなんとなく楽しいだけで何度も足を運んでいた。

しかし年齢を重ね、それなりに社会課題にも興味を抱くようになり、特に子育てをする中で現状や未来に真剣に向き合うようになると、とたんに都会のシステムが思考の基準である今の自分の考え方に、さらにはその中だけで日常生活を送る人生に、なんとなく不自然さや物足りなさを感じるようになってきた。

それが、鋸南町ともっと深く関わってみようと決心した理由だ。

日本の魅力についてもっと深く理解することが未来につながると信じ、田舎暮らしをする。そして自然な流れで地域活性化にも貢献出来ればなおさら嬉しい。

これまで同様に都会暮らしは続けつつ、鋸南町での田舎暮らしをする。対極的ともいえるこの二つの生活を両立させることで何が生まれるか、どんな未来が待っているのか、楽しみすぎる。
